“Osteopathy is a safe and effective patient centred manual therapy which works in combination with the individuals own homeostatic mechanisms to help restore balance and optimal health. It works with the understanding that the way the body is able to function is inseparable from the way it is structured.

All aspects of the body must work together to maintain health and the osteopathic approach is able to address the person as a whole to improve not only structure and therefore function but overall health and wellbeing.

Osteopathic Practitioners support the body’s ability to restore and maintain health by using skilled palpation and manual techniques to influence muscles, joints, nerves, connective tissue, circulation and internal organs.

Osteopathic Practitioners treat people of all ages, from newborns to seniors. If you are experiencing pain or dysfunction, or want to take preventative measures to improve your health, Osteopathy can help." - Osteopathybc

Heidi’s path to massage therapy began in Ontario with 15 years of dance practice, then studying and practicing yoga for 10 years. She completed a yoga teacher training program in 2010 through Langara College in Vancouver, followed by a month of further study in India. Growing up Heidi was also greatly influenced by stories of healing and healthcare about her maternal great great grandmother who was a midwife, and Grandma who was a nurse (both in the Netherlands), and paternal grandparents who were a doctor and nurse in Nigeria.

These experiences and influences planted a seed of passion in Heidi for self learning about the body, movement and healthcare. However, it was a back injury and years of chronic pain from compounded injuries that brought her to seek out massage therapy. She found it so helpful; not only over time did she find relief from years of physical pain but it also eased her anxiety. This inspired Heidi to enter massage therapy school and she graduated from The Vancouver College of Massage Therapy in 2012.

Heidi practices massage therapy with an intuitive, compassionate and caring approach and strives to make each person feel welcome and safe. She considers all layers of the body during treatment utilizing a blend of fascial techniques (which do not use oil as the intended tissues or structures need to be engaged), Swedish Massage (using organic oils), joint mobilizations, and stretching.

When appropriate, Heidi integrates mindfulness techniques into her massage treatments such as meditation, body awareness and breathing practices, and offers therapeutic home care including stretches, movement and strengthening for the body.

When not at Kitsilano Massage Therapy, Heidi can be found spending time with her partner and two children, moving her body in ways that bring her joy, and spending as much time as possible outside.

Heidi values continued education and learning. Listed below are continuing education courses she has completed: - The Sphenoid Gateway - Moving from the Organs - VM (Visceral Manipulation) Level I - Female Pelvis - The Cervical Region - The Spinal Column - The Thorax - The Lumbosacral Region and Pelvis - The Extremities - Freeing the Hips (webinar) - Balancing the Legs and Feet (webinar) - Massage Therapy During the Childbearing Year: Part 1- Pregnancy, and Part 2- Labour, Birth and PP - Fundamentals of Pain Science for RMTs (webinar) - Bringing Research to Practice- Lower Back and Pelvic Pain (webinar) - CMTBC Indigenous Cultural Safety, Humility and Anti-Racism - CMTBC Documentation in Massage Therapy Practice - CMTBC Code of Ethics and Practice Environment Standard of Practice - CMTBC Boundaries Standard of Practice and Consent Standard of Practice - Trans Care BC- Intro to Gender Diversity expanded

Heidi acknowledges that she lives and works on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

My journey in massage therapy started in 1996. I was a fitness leader, personal trainer, triathlete and marathoner. Then I prolapsed a disc in my back. I went to physiotherapy and rehab but my injury still prevented me from performing to the same level as I had previously. A friend of mine suggested going to a registered massage therapist. I was amazed at how much it helped facilitate the healing process. Previously I could only ride my bike for a few hours, but after I found massage I went on to compete in Ironman Canada three times, riding my bike in training for 6 to 7 hours at a stretch. This lead to a desire to have a more therapeutic practice. Since graduating from massage therapy school in 2001, I am dedicated to lifelong professional development. Post graduate studies have included muscle energy for the spine, pelvis and ribs, myofascial release for the shoulder and pelvis, visceral manipulation, cranial sacral therapy, deep tissue therapy and joint mobilizations. As a practitioner, I like to tailor each treatment to the individual. With experience, a sense of humour and a positive attitude, I try to help each person that crosses my table take a step closer to wellness. As an RMT practitioner helping to enrich all of my clients lives for over 20 years, I feel tremendous happiness going to work each day and feel that I have found my niche. Having played sports my entire life, I began seeing an RMT in my early teens. Not only did these treatments provide me with pain relief and improved performance, they helped me understand the direct connection between my physical body and my overall well-being. I graduated from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy, where I gained experience and skills to treat conditions of myofascial, neurological, and orthopaedic origins. My treatments are tailored to each individuals’ specific needs, using a variety of techniques, including: myofascial release, trigger point therapy, joint mobilizations, deep tissue, and Swedish massage techniques. Through my own experiences dealing with injuries, I have learnt the importance of remedial exercises and stretching in obtaining optimal health, and I include such recommendations within my treatments When not working, I like to enjoy the great outdoors, cooking healthy meals, and spending time with my family and friends. I can usually be found training for my next half marathon by running local trails or hiking up the Grouse Grind.
